Workplace Investigations

Independent, impartial investigations into workplace misconduct, grievances, and disciplinary matters for UK employers

What Are Workplace Investigations?

Workplace investigations are formal enquiries conducted to establish facts relating to allegations of misconduct, policy breaches, grievances, or other workplace issues. An effective investigation gathers evidence, interviews relevant parties, analyses findings, and produces a report that enables fair decision-making. Using an independent investigator ensures impartiality, protects the organisation from claims of bias, and produces outcomes that are defensible at employment tribunal.

Who This Service Is For

This service is designed for UK employers of all sizes who require independent investigation support. It is particularly valuable when internal resources lack capacity or appropriate independence, when allegations involve senior personnel, when the subject matter is sensitive or complex, or when previous internal investigations have been challenged.

What This Service Covers

  • Gross misconduct investigations
  • Grievance investigations (formal and complex)
  • Bullying and harassment enquiries
  • Discrimination complaint investigations
  • Whistleblowing allegation investigations
  • Fraud and financial irregularity enquiries
  • Policy breach investigations
  • Conduct and capability matters

Legal and Compliance Context

All workplace investigations are conducted in accordance with the ACAS Code of Practice on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures, which employment tribunals consider when assessing fairness. Investigations also comply with the Equality Act 2010, UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018, and relevant employment law principles.

Our investigators understand the legal context in which their findings may be used—including disciplinary hearings, grievance outcomes, and employment tribunal proceedings. Reports are drafted to withstand legal scrutiny.

How the Service Is Delivered

Investigations begin with a scoping meeting to understand the allegations, identify the relevant policies, and agree terms of reference. The investigator then gathers documentary evidence, conducts witness interviews, and interviews the subject of the investigation (providing appropriate opportunity to respond). All interviews are recorded and summarised. Findings are analysed objectively, and a comprehensive investigation report is produced. The investigator can attend disciplinary or grievance hearings to present findings if required.
